What Happens to Your Brain After a Chiropractic Adjustment
We’re about to get really geeky. These next two blogs are about the chiropractic and the evidence that shows what happens to your brain and body when we put input into the nervous system i.e. what happens when we adjust you. This is a two-part blog looking at the incredible changes and reactions your brain has to adjustments, and then in the next blog we’ll look at the what happens in the body as a result.
I’ve had great fun researching for this blog, and the fundamental thing to take away from it is that an adjustment can change how your brain processes information. This can happen instantly.
Your spine is full of receptors that constantly send information to your brain about where your body is in space and how it is moving. This process is called proprioception.

We know that when the spine moves well, the information your brain receives is clear. When this movement in the spine is restricted, the internal map your brain has of your body becomes distorted or fuzzy. Chiropractic adjustments restore movement in the spine, which improves the quality of input into the brain. Dr Heidi Haavik and her colleagues have shown that after an adjustment:
The brain integrates sensory information more accurately (sensorimotor integration)
The motor cortex — the part of the brain that controls voluntary movement — shows measurable changes in activity
The brain becomes more efficient at recruiting stabilising muscles
Reaction times become faster
Some of these changes have been recorded within milliseconds of the adjustment. That speed is important, because it shows chiropractic is not just about long-term posture changes, it also has an immediate effect on how the brain is processing input. If you’ve ever had an adjustment and it didn’t click or crack, but it was at lightning speed, you’ll know that the effect will still have happened. Chiropractic is not just cracking backs.
Why This Matters
Because the brain is receiving better input, it produces better output. That means clearer maps of your body, more precise control, and faster responses to your environment.
